MANHATTAN BEACH BEAUTY WINS MISS BROOKLYN TITLE

Keelie Sheridan, 22 year old Irish Step Dancer to represent borough at Miss New York State Pageant in June

(Brooklyn, NY - February 24, 2009) – Just weeks before St. Patrick’s Day, a 22 year old Irish Step Dancer caught the eye of the judges during the annual Miss Brooklyn Scholarship Pageant held on Sunday, February 22nd at Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts, Long Island University – Brooklyn Campus. Keelie Sheridan of Manhattan Beach will represent the borough during the Miss New York State Scholarship Program June 26 – 28, 2009.

“I feel truly humbled and privileged to bring the honor of the Miss Brooklyn 2009 crown home to Manhattan Beach,” says Keelie Sheridan. “I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to promote both my personal platform and the Miss Brooklyn Organization as I become further acquainted with all of the wonderfully diverse neighborhoods and people in my borough. I look forward to making Brooklyn proud at the Miss New York State pageant this summer.”

Promoting Performing Arts Opportunities for Underprivileged Youth will be the focus of Sheridan’s reign as Miss Brooklyn 2009.  Sheridan is currently in conversation with the Sheepshead Bay Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library to create a theater arts program for youth in the area which will hopefully expand throughout the borough.

Sheridan plans to use her $1000 scholarship prize to further her education at Empire State College where she is currently a Junior with a double major in English and Theater. She is the recipient of multiple citizenship awards; has been invited to dance at the 2009 Irish Step Dancing World Championships; founding member of Mind the Art Theater Company; and has maintained an acting career while attending school, working full-time, volunteering, and training in Irish Step Dancing.

Also in the winner’s circle was Brooklyn Height’s Carlon Alexandra who placed 1st runner up and won the Talent Award; Greenpoint’s Claudia Zakrzewski who placed 2nd runner up and won the Lifestyle & Fitness Award in Swimsuit; and Bensonhurst’s Christine Florio who placed 3rd runner up. Jennifer Velasquez of Crown Heights won the Community Service Award.

Each contestant was presented with gifts from Spartak Chocolate Company, Nature Pure Lab, North American Crystal, and Miss Jessie’s Hair products. Additional sponsors include New York Steak House, and Block Institute who presented the 2009 Miss Brooklyn with a check for $500 to be donated to the Children’s Miracle Network in her honor.

Miss Brooklyn’s Outstanding Teen 2009 title was awarded to Melanie Gowrie, a 16 year old sophomore at Laguardia’s High School for the Performing Arts. Gowrie performed a dramatic skit which won her the Talent Award. Gowrie won a $250 cash scholarship and advances to the Miss New York Outstanding Teen Pageant this June.

The Miss America Organization is one of the nation’s leading achievement programs and the world’s largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance.
